Abstract

Ratibu Jacocks interviewed Edna M. Noble, Helen Louise Carter Thomas, Bettye Marie Brewster, and Joyce Smith, members of the Social Lites, Inc. club. The women began the interview with how the club started in the 1950s in order to give scholarships to young men who were unable to access them. After going over their own history, the women talked about going to the schools to give the scholarships that came from their own pockets. They also spoke about the expected roles for women at that time and events such as the Beautillion. For them, the biggest contribution they had as a club was their scholarships. They felt that helping students in need was important and hoped to make connections with past participants. The four women went over the needed continuation of the club and the many expectations they had for the winners of the scholarships. The interview ended with future ideas of how to visually recognize the students’ successes.
