Toilet-training Children with Developmental Disabilities

Toilet-training children with developmental disabilities can be a stressful and challenging process for parents and other caregivers. When it comes to toilet training expectations, parents tend to underestimate the age of initiating toileting and the amount of time required to complete the toilet training process (Stephens & Silber, 1974). The purpose of this project is to provide parents and caregivers of children with developmental disabilities with information on the toileting learning process. Information will be disseminated in the form of a small group workshop with the purpose of enhancing caregiver knowledge and self-efficacy. The workshop will consist of two 1 ½-hour sessions and will address the different components of toileting skills, challenges to toileting, approaches to toileting, American Association of Pediatrics guidelines/suggestions, and the effectiveness/evaluation of each approach. Participants will complete a Pre-and post-training self-assessments, and a workshop evaluation.
