Abstract

In this interview, John Coleman is the guest and his focus is on his experience in the military. During the recording, Coleman explains the lack of employment for his local Black population that led to many men joining the military service. Most of his own experience took place during the Korean War, though World War II was mentioned for others. In his own military service, he spoke of working as a radio operator and meeting people from different cultures, such as those who were Korean and Japanese. Coleman also touches upon the problems that resulted from the war, such as people who served dying at an early age and other issues. The interview ends with Coleman recollecting how he had been told to shave by a sergeant after not following policy.
