Abstract

The goal of this research is to design and construct low cost Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) utilizing inexpensive tools, and applying basic mechanical, electrical, and programming techniques. The affordability and modesty of this design is intended to expand the exposure of surface microscopy to a broader range of students. We have designed 3D CAD models of the prototype and its intermediate construction jigs in order to optimize the dimensions and to guide the construction of physical structures. The purpose of intermediate jigs was to help create reproducible and consistent components for the overall assembly of the STM.
