Abstract
To compose original music, students must first research the practical specifics of an instrument or group of instruments, the intended performer or ensemble, the limitations and expectations of the premier performance, as well as the existing repertoire for the particular instrument or ensemble. All this practical information should inform the composition of a new work. Under guidance of a faculty mentor, three student composers will each undertake an individual project, carry out this research, and write an original musical composition.
