Abstract
This study explores the hidden costs faced by students with dependents in the California State University (CSU) System. Although students with dependents make up a significant population within the California student population, data on student with dependents is limited, their needs and struggles remain underreported making efforts to address their needs effectively harder. Despite the passage of California’s Assembly Bill 2881, which mandates that all community colleges and Cal State systems do more for this population, compliance remains low, citing a lack of reliable data. This study takes on a mixed-methods approach to investigate the hidden costs associated with being a student with dependents. Utilizing surveys and interviews, we assess their barriers and needs. By highlighting these hidden costs, this research aims to promote and use that information as a vehicle to bring resources to the California State University system; with proper support, students with dependents will have more equitable opportunities that can lead to degree completion without significant and lasting strain on this student population.
