Abstract
Reentry into society following incarceration represents a critical transition that significantly influences long-term stability and recidivism outcomes. Formerly incarcerated adults frequently encounter structural barriers related to housing, employment, behavioral health access, and social reintegration, highlighting the need for effective reentry programming. The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine factors that contribute to the effectiveness of community-based reentry programs for formerly incarcerated adults and to understand how participants and service providers perceive successful reintegration outcomes. Guided by ecological systems theory and empowerment theory, this study employs a qualitative phenomenological design using semi-structured interviews with approximately 15 formerly incarcerated adults participating in Southern California reentry programs. Data collection will focus on participant experiences related to housing stability, employment support, behavioral health services, program relationships, cultural responsiveness, and community reintegration. Data from the interview will be analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and perceived mechanisms of program effectiveness. Expected findings may highlight the importance of wraparound services, trauma-informed care, culturally responsive practices, and strong therapeutic relationships in promoting engagement and long-term stability. This study also aims to expand the definition of successful reentry beyond recidivism to include psychosocial well-being, empowerment, and community belonging. Implications for social work practice may include strengthening person-centered and equity-focused reentry interventions, improving interagency collaboration, and informing policy decisions that prioritize supportive services over surveillance-based approaches. This research contributes to advancing social justice by centering the lived experiences of individuals directly impacted by incarceration and reintegration systems.
