Abstract
In my ventures through art I realized that I underwent an experience that was tailored to my process of release. As I struggled to share my emotions, I became distant and dissociated, I felt detached from others and even from myself. This process was something I visualized in my art from, the Tears, to Self Destruction, to the Release and onto the Garden. I’ve always felt myself in a state of Release, partly healed and partly damaged. All I knew was that the garden represented a new beginning for me, I just never knew what that Garden was. Time passes and as I grow as an artist, I found myself creating works with the purpose of sharing information in Illustration. It’s about my culture and my roots from Mexico, as I delved deeper into its history and its indigenous roots. I grew a sense of pride and inspiration wanting to share what I have learned. Precious Knowledge is what I like to call it, as it contains the power to not only lift me up, but also my friends, family and further onto my community. From paintings, to digital illustrations, to melting crayons, through video art, I bend mediums as I please to tell our story that has been warped to fit other’s agendas. While it may have taken some time to move on from the ‘Release’ stage from my process, I believe I have found my “Garden”. The Garden takes many forms, in its visual imagery but at the root of it is decolonization and reclamation of
information that has been erased but turned anew. Although it is thought to have been subdued and conquered, life continues and evolves rooted with its origin but transforms.
