Abstract
Background: Substance use disorder affects people from all walks of life and all age groups. It creates physical as well as mental harm not only to those using illicit substances but also to their loved ones. Objective: This project is designed to understand the impact of substance use and help those struggling to stay sober by developing a handbook that will be a helpful guide for navigating the steps needed to remain clean and understand behavior change. Methods: A systematic review of literature from published articles was conducted to understand substance use disorders, their impact on mental health, and what steps are taken to mitigate those issues. Result: A guide was created based on the findings from the articles that would be helpful in the recovery journey of those individuals struggling with substance abuse and higher relapses as they seek treatment. Conclusion: A well-structured patient handbook can be a valuable tool in supporting long-term recovery for individuals undergoing substance abuse treatment.
