Abstract

The purpose of this study is to create a guideline for security teams to have visibility to inbound trailers. This is based off a taxonomy that identifies three IoT (Internet of Things) characteristics. Once the characteristics are defined that are needed, you can place a device in this taxonomy to see if the device can perform the characteristics you need. The research questions entail creating a guideline. (1) What types of IoT devices can be used to mitigate the problem of missing containers? (2) How can security firms or security teams use a relevant taxonomy to identify the type of IoT they want carriers to use to track their freight? (3) What are some issues in IoT that would limit its use in securing trailers? The characteristics used can help identify the device needed, to help mitigate the missing trailers. This could help create a standard within a company on the requisites a carrier should have within their trailer security system, so SCI (Supply Chain Investigations) has visibility. Some of the limits may be that you will not find an IoT that fits your need, which can lead to question, does this guideline need to be changed to adjust to what the current technology and devices you can use. All of this is important because there does not seem to be a standard for security teams required to have trailers equipped with IoTTS. With these IoTTS guidelines, companies can adapt the plan to their own needs, since I only focus on one company’s needs. Maybe other company’s already have guidelines in place or do not have issues with missing trailers. With this new guideline, I believe it will create a standard that all security teams could follow and use to track their freight.
