Summary
"Growing Up on 7th street in the 40's and 50's"
In this inaugural interview, Dr. Tom Rivera interviews Adam Ornelas whose father owned a barber shop located at the northwest corner of Seventh and N Streets in Colton. Mr. Ornelas takes us on a descriptive 3-block walk remembering the shops that existed on Seventh Street from the 1940’s to the 1970’s. There were grocery stores, tortilla shops, barber shops, gasoline stations, bars, bakeries, restaurants, dance halls, theaters, meeting halls, and the local Catholic church at the north side of the district. Mr. Ornelas and Dr. Rivera reminisce about the owners of the businesses on Seventh and surrounding streets. As the years passed, most of the businesses in the shopping district, “The Broadway of South Colton”, went into decline and closed, while the buildings fell into disrepair and were eventually torn down.
