Summary

Tom Rivera interviewed Manuel Beltran, as well as his daughter Stephanie Beltran Hasso in the Colton Area Museum on May 2, 2015. In this interview Manuel Beltran talked about his life in Colton, particularly South Colton, and how he has served his community as a form of thanks. He and Stephanie discuss the history of his predecessors’ arrival to Colton with Rivera as well as what schools they went to in the city. Both the father and daughter focus partly on education and Manuel talked about the importance of achieving a secondary education. Manuel Beltran dives into his role in after-school programs, social work, as a substance abuse counselor, and in child abuse investigations and how that was a result of the community’s support in his achievements. Manuel describes his interactions with helping victims of substance abuse, of whom some were his friends, alongside his love of South Colton and baseball. Manuel and Rivera discuss the de facto segregation in the city in their youth and how it has changed. They also discuss the industrialization of Colton but end with a heartfelt reminiscence of the Chicano community’s unity and care for one another.
