Summary
"Buying Our Home in North Colton"
Mr. and Mrs. Sal Ayala share the stories of how their families came to Colton. Sal’s family came around 1905 from Guanajuato and Jalisco, Mexico. He was born in Colton in 1925. His wife Frances was born in Mezquital Del Oro, Zacatecas, Mexico and came to California in 1926. Sal and Frances recount how they experienced and overcame anti-Mexican discrimination in the early years of their lives, and through the 1950’s in the Colton School District, in the downtown business district, while entering the work force, and while looking to purchase a home. Sal worked behind the scenes to push for better conditions in the school system, and for the improvement of public utilities in South Colton. In the mid 1950’s they were one of the first families to purchase a home in North Colton.
