Abstract
Jimmy Jews discusses his experiences growing up in Birmingham, Alabama and the events that followed his move to San Bernardino. His family played an important role in his relationship with academics, which ultimately led to his acceptance to the Navy. After four years of service he moved to San Bernardino where he faced difficulties finding a place to live due to discrimination. He shares what it was like to deal with the barriers of racism whilst being a Black police officer and the first Black firefighter in the San Bernardino fire department. After 25 years as a firefighter, he retired and found a position in welfare. In his recent years, he has continued to be an involved member of the community and is working towards diversifying the fire department by recruiting more Black female firefighters.
