Abstract
Mikki Cichocki shares stories of growing up in San Bernardino, California as the child of an interracial couple. It explores her parents' move from Ohio to California, the social organizations her mother Sylvia Cichocki was involved in like the Swans, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and the Links, and the musical groups she participated in like the Evergreen Singers. The summary also covers Mikki's memories of the thriving downtown San Bernardino of her childhood, the impact of the closure of Norton Air Force Base, and the changes she has witnessed in the community over time. Additionally, Mikki reflects on the strong presence of black educators and community leaders who served as role models and helped shape her own path back to San Bernardino as an advocate for public education and student empowerment. The interview paints a vivid picture of the unique history and dynamics of the San Bernardino community through Mikki's personal experiences and perspectives.
