Abstract

Clifton Harris recounts his experiences growing up in San Bernardino, California in the 1960s and 1970s. He describes the diverse and inclusive community he was part of, with Hispanic, Asian, and Black families interacting and supporting each other. Harris was involved in music and car clubs as a teenager, and his father-in-law was active in local politics, helping to elect African-American officials. Harris later joined the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department after being recruited by the sheriff himself, learning about the political dynamics between the sheriff's department and the city police. Harris also shares memories of the vibrant local music scene, playing in bands that performed at venues across the Inland Empire and even meeting famous musicians like Miles Davis. Harris's story provides a rich historical perspective on the African-American experience and community life in San Bernardino during an important era of social and political change.
