Summary
Tom Rivera interviewed Ernie Gomez and his nephew Henry Vasquez, two South Colton men with a rich history in music. The interview began with information about Gomez’s mother, who taught music for many years and created a new generation of musicians in the South Colton area. There was also a discussion about music played at events such as La Fiestas Patrias, schools, and even weddings. While playing in bands, Gomez explained that despite the segregation at the time in South Colton, music did not discriminate and bands were usually diverse. Henry Vasquez spoke about his journey with music after interacting with the Native American Education Program in his school. He learned about his Mexican Indigenous heritage and that impacted his use of instruments like the flute. The final conversation was about Gomez’s mother giving up music and Gomez’s musical talent while in the Marine Corps.
