What Are We Seeing? Change, Evolution, or What.
Abstract
A comparative case study on two Los Angeles based gangs, Hoover Criminals and East Coast Crips. We compared the centrality of these gangs and changes in their attacking behaviors using a social network analysis approach. Violent gang related incidents for each gang were found and mapped to see how violent conflict evolved over time. Within our networks we found substance change rather than evolution requiring us to rethink our analytic approach. Changes observed in networks cannot be solely attributed to civil gang injunctions being that the East Coast Crips did not have one. Future focus may want to look at the hierarchical structure of gang in the cities they are embedded in.
