E Clampus Vitus was founded by Emphram Bee in the 1840s. Member Joe Zumwalt came to California to make his fortune in the gold rush. He kept the spirit of E Clampus Vitus alive in an organization to support miners and to provide aid miner’s widows and children. The organization was revived in San Francisco in 1931 with an emphasis on the mission of preserving and promoting local history. There are over 50 Chapters in California. The San Bernardino/Riverside Chapter is the Billy Holcomb Chapter. Members research local landmarks and local historical events and publish their findings.
