Summary

Tom Rivera, with temporary co-interviewer Cesar Caballero, interviews guest Ernie Garcia, who was the Dean of the School of Education for over two decades at California State University San Bernardino. The first topic revolves around information about the individuals from Colton who found success and soon after turned to his personal memories. Garcia mentions his parents, how they came from Mexico to the United States, and his father’s knowledge without a formal education. The topic shifts towards businesses in South Colton, many of which are remembered fondly but long closed. Garcia speaks of his school years, particularly how schools were created based on segregation and how his ethnic circle was expected to do worse in academics. Both Rivera and Garcia then discuss the Broadway of South Colton as well as the many businesses and hangouts they can remember. The interviewee discusses his plans to continue his education at UCR but how an order to report for the International Guard paused it. Rivera asked Garcia about the new book he was writing at the time of the interview. The interview ends with Garcia talking about a recollection of acting as a Crusader with friends and memories of people who impacted him in his life.
