Abstract

In the U.S., there is a shortage of foster parents, which limits the number of children placed in homes that are appropriate to their needs. Many states across the U.S. are experiencing an increase in the number of children in foster care as well as high foster parent turnover rates and low retention rates. This proposed research study will examine the readiness and willingness of foster parents in San Bernardino County, California to care for children who have multiple placement moves, behavioral issues, trauma, and insecure attachments. Based on their experiences, participants will be asked to evaluate and discuss fostering and the fostering process. The study will use an exploratory method with a quantitative approach to examine the readiness and willingness of adult foster parents to care for children who have multiple placement moves, behavioral issues, trauma, and insecure attachments in San Bernardino County. Participants will be asked a few questions on why they became foster parents, their satisfaction with becoming a foster parent, and their experiences with child(ren) who have multiple placement moves, behavioral issues, trauma, insecure attachments, and some demographics via a survey, which will take 15 to 30 minutes to complete. Finally, a discussion of the study’s limitations and contributions to future social work practices and research will be added for thorough exploration of the proposed study topic.
