Description

Contributor generated description: “This is a 1:16 video, released in February 2021, that previews CSUSB Opera Theatre's filmed production of "Song From the Uproar," an opera by contemporary composer Missy Mazzoli. The avant garde piece tells the story of the life of early 20th-century feminist, nomad and novelist Isabelle Eberhardt (1877-1904), who left her native home of Geneva, Switzerland to travel the deserts of North Africa.

Stage direction is by Dr. Stacey Fraser, chair of the CSUSB Department of Music; musical direction is by Dr. Alastair Edmonstone, the department's accompanist.

Originally planned as a traditional, live stage performance, COVID-19 required a bold new approach, including how to deliver a work meant for the stage while CSUSB was operating largely remotely in Fall 2020.

A decision was made to film the work in pieces, both on campus before an empty theatre and on location in the desert, all under strict health and safety restrictions such as face masks with clear panels and socially distanced rehearsals and recording sessions.

The film is expected to stream online beginning in late March 2021."
