Summary

"The Boys Scout Experience in the 50’s"

Dr. Tom Rivera interviews members of Boy Scout Troop Number 45 from the 1950’s. After 60 years, Ernie Colunga, Luis Gómez, Albert Felix, Rudy Luna, and Frank Gonzales reminisce about the good times that they had participating in the Boy Scout meetings and outings under the leadership of Ray Abril, Sr. and Saúl Durán, senior patrol leader. Scout meetings were held in a classroom at Garfield Elementary School where they learned the basics of scout safety and the rules in the scout handbook. They had the opportunity to earn merit badges, learned how to tie knots, participated in contests, and went on many memorable outings and camping trips to the Santa Ana River, Blue Mountain, and visits to some of our local lakes in the mountains. All the members present agreed that under Mr. Abril’s leadership and following the Boy Scout code, they were persuaded to live peacefully and contribute constructively to the betterment of life in the barrios of South Colton.
